Tomatoes, strawberries and sustainable food production

Horti-BlueC – come along and find out about new directions for sustainable food production in this family event hosted by the University of Portsmouth.

In conjunction with the Portsmouth Climate Festival, this public event includes a summary of key research findings from the University of Portsmouth research project Horti-BlueC. Horti-BlueC has developed a sustainable and peat-free recycled compost blend for growing tomatoes, strawberries and other greenhouse crops. The new blend has been designed to reduce carbon emissions associated with food production, and so help to achieve climate targets and tackle climate change.

This family-oriented event will offer an opportunity to find out about the project results and listen to short talks from University of Portsmouth researchers on topics such as the health benefits of tomatoes and consumer attitudes to ‘green’ labelling.

You will be able to participate in hands-on activities, sample tomato-based snacks and check out a giant tomato root in virtual reality.
This project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund under the Interreg 2 Seas programme.
